Christmas Party, Gift Exchange, and Pot Luck
Massac Quilter's Guild is a friendly group of quilters. Our ladies have a wide range of skill levels. Some are just beginning. Some are wonderfully gifted. Some have published books. We all share a profound love of the craft and a sincere desire to share all we have with our sisters. We meet once a month at the Community Center in Metropolis, Illinois.
Treats & Fellowship Two members share hostess duties each month. They bring whatever they choose. Some bake something special. Some prepare fruit or cheese and crackers - it's their choice. We always enjoy it, whether it is healthy or decadent -- or both!
Guild Business Meeting We have a Guild President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. We also have a member in charge of the monthly e-mail. This monthly reminder of the upcoming meeting includes minutes of the last meeting, details for our next class and supply lists for those who plan to take the class.
Classes & Demos In September each year, we plan for the upcoming 12 months. We discuss patterns and techniques we want to learn, and volunteer for our turn as Hostess. Each month, one of us teaches a "Class" or does a demo of a technique that others want to learn. All our classes are free. On days when there is an extended class, those who stay bring their sewing machines and a sack lunch. The guild has irons and ironing boards and cutting mats for all to share. Occasionally there might be a small fee for copies.
Block-of-the-Month Some members enjoy the challenge of a new block to learn each month. In the past, we have done both a block sampler assembled by a member and the 2009 Debbie Mumm Sampler. This year, we hope to eventually begin a sampler of Ohio Star Blocks. We try to finish one block each month and bring them for the display wall during Show & Tell.
Charm Square Drawing Each month we focus on a different color family and bring one or more 6-1/2" squares of the assigned color. For instance, in February everyone brought a red fabric. For each square you bring, you put your name in the 'pot' one time. At the end of the meeting, we draw a name and the winner takes home all the squares. Good Luck!
Charity Project Our goal is to make enough lap robes for every resident in the local nursing homes. The members work at home, and at special work sessions, to assemble and quilt lap robes and walker bags and shoulder shrugs. We have also sponsored stars on Angel Trees, asssembed dozens of Kooler Neck Wraps for the military, and made special quilts and wall-hangings for display in the offices of the Mayor and other area social service organizations.
Fall Quilt Show We are proud to be intimately involved in the Super City-Quilt City Connection in September which is a shared venture between Metropolis Tourism (Super City) and Paducah, Kentucky (Quilt City). Check it out here We are proud to place our quilts and wall-hangings on display at the Harrah's Event/Convention Center. We have a Raffle Basket, supervise voting for the Viewer's Choice awards (Sponsored by Harrah's Casino), and coordinate entries in the annual SuperBlock Challenge (Sponsored by Hancock's of Paducah).
Christmas Party, Gift Exchange & Pot-Luck Christmas is a special time for quilters. We celebrate at a festive party with all the trappings of the season. A groaning pot-luck table with plenty of chocolate and desserts is only the beginning. We showcase all of our quilting efforts on the Show & Tell Wall. Seeing what we have made for others is an inspiration for next year. We have a quilt-themed gift exchange; somehow everyone gets just what they wanted! Finally, we make arrangements to deliver all the lap-robes, walker bags, and other items that we have made for area nursing homes to brighten the season for others.
